Breaking away from success – and being typecast

Imagination Connoisseur, Omar 94, asks why certain actors get typecast.  What actors do you think have been unfairly typecast? Is it just the price of success? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Hi Rob,

I find it a little interesting by the fact that it’s an actor’s job to act and play different roles, but sometimes end up getting type cast.

Arnold Schwarzenegger stated the reason he wanted to make Ivan Reitman’s Twins, was because he wanted to try doing comedy and not just be type cast as an action star.

Jon Hamm said the reason he took on a role in Ben Affleck’s The Town was because it was very different from his role in Mad Men. After the success of Mad Men, Hamm said he started getting scripts that were either 1960s period pieces or advertising related, and was happy when The Town was available as it was completely different.

For years, Gary Oldman was always cast as bad guys, but eventually started playing different roles.

I’m not sure why studios and filmmakers type cast, but they should know it’s an actor’s job to be able to play different roles.

Thanks, live long and prosper.
